About John E. Fitzgerald Larceny Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

According to legend, John E. Fitzgerald founded a distillery along the banks of the Kentucky River shortly after the Civil War ended. Fitzgerald began distilling bourbon and selling it to passengers aboard the trains and steamships that passed through town. Shortly thereafter, Fitzgerald sold his brand "Old Fitzgerald Bourbon" to Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle for $10,000, a small fortune at the time. Pappy moved production of Old Fitz to his distillery, where it became one of the most famous bourbons in the world.

But if you ask Sally Van Winkle (Pappy's granddaughter), the story of John E. Fitzgerald and Old Fitz Bourbon is slightly more complicated and certainly more interesting. In 1999, Van Winkle revealed that Fitzgerald was not the man nor the distiller he claimed to be — he was, in fact, a bonded treasury agent. At the time, the Treasury Department was tasked with collecting taxes levied on spirits and as such, bonded treasury agents were the only people legally allowed to carry the keys to barrel storage warehouses.

Fitzgerald did have a discerning palate for fine bourbon and would use his warehouse keys to pilfer the best barrels of bourbon as they aged. The barrels, which became known as "Fitzgerald barrels," and the brand were immortalized when Pappy Van Winkle named Old Fitzgerald bourbon after the treasury agent, and added a "Whisper of Wheat" to his bourbon's recipe. By using wheat rather than rye as the secondary grain in the bourbon's mash bill, Pappy imparted a rounder, softer flavor profile in Old Fitz as compared to other bourbons at the time.

The extremely successful Larceny Kentucky Straight Bourbon was launched in 2012 by Heaven Hill Distillery and pays homage to both John E. Fitzgerald's superb taste and the legacy of the Old Fitzgerald brand. Its big brother — the small batch barrel proof version — will be released thrice per year and bottled at (varying) barrel proof with no chill filtering. True to the tradition of Old Fitz, this wheated bourbon replaces rye with wheat and features a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat, and 12% malted barley. As a result, Larceny Bourbon has a sweeter, softer, and rounder flavor profile compared to bourbons that use rye as their secondary grain. The resulting bourbon has bready notes, honey, vanilla, maple, dark sugar, nuts, and light cinnamon, along with a hint of oak and spice that provides for a subtle edge that finishes with a prolonged warmth. Each batch is planned to have bourbon aged 6 to 8 years.

About Glengoyne 35 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Glengoyne Single Malt Whisky is produced exclusively from Golden Promise barley. Golden Promise is an early-maturing spring barley that has a depth of flavor ideal for single malts. While it was popular in the production of whisky for many years, it gave way to cheaper barely that was higher in yield but lower in quality. Today, Glengoyne, along with The Macallan, is one of only two distilleries remaining in Scotland that continues to use Golden Promise barley.

Once the Golden Promise barley has been air-dried, it is milled and mashed before being fermented for 56 hours in washbacks crafted from pine. Following fermentation, the wash is distilled through Glengoyne's copper-pot wash still and then again through its two copper-pot spirit stills, working in tandem (whisky is distilled more slowly at Glengoyne than at any other distillery in Scotland). The copper stills remove any remaining sulphur in the wash, and produce the sweet, concentrated flavors that define Glengoyne Scotch Whisky.

Distilled in the 1970’s this impeccably aged whisky is 35 years in the making. This is a complex malt full of tropical intensity rich licorice and dark chocolate finish. This is an exceptionally rare spirit with only 500 bottles available in the world. Each hand-blown decanter is engraved, numbered, and collared in gold with a crystal stopper. Housed in a handcrafted bespoke, solid oak gull-wing box.

About Glengoyne

Situated in a wooded valley in the Highlands region of Scotland, Glengoyne Distillery was founded by George Campbell and has been producing single malt whisky continuously since 1833. The distillery, which takes its name from "Glen Guin" or Glen of the Wild Geese, is situated directly atop the Highlands Line — the line that divides the Highlands and Lowlands regions of Scotland. As a result, while Glengoyne Single Malt Scotch Whisky is dis tilled in the Highlands region, it is matured in the Lowlands region, despite the fact that the distillery's stillhouse and maturation warehouses are across the street from each other.

About Scotch

Scotch is the most popular whisky in the world and is considered the king of them all! There are five whisky regions in Scotland (six if you count the not officially recognized Islands), and each of them produces spirits with unique properties and distinct tasting notes. (The type of grain used determents the type of the scotch.)

Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.

About Nikka Yoichi 15 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

Yoichi 15 Year Old Single Malt Whisky is a single malt whisky produced exclusively at the Yoichi Distillery. The aroma and delicate body of the whisky are a product of direct-heating distillation (meaning that the pot stills used during distillation are heated with finely powdered natural coal rather than an electrical source), a method that was used centuries ago but is hardly ever used today. After distillation, the whisky is aged for 15 years in a rickhouse just one kilometer from the Sea of Japan, resulting in a hint of crisp saltiness.

Yoichi 15 Year Old Single Malt Whisky earned the Gold Medal at the International Spirits Competition in 2010 and a score of 95 points from Whisky Advocate.

About Nikka Whisky

In 1895, Masataka Taketsuru — the father of Japanese Whisky — was born in the small town of Takehara, Japan. At the time, Masataka's family owned a sake brewery, and in preparing to carry on the family trade, Masataka studied chemistry and biology at Osaka Technical High School. Upon matriculation, however, Masataka showed more interest in whisky than in sake and in 1918, enrolled at the University of Glasgow, becoming the first Japanese ever to study the art of whisky-making.

While in Scotland, Masataka took chemistry courses during the day while apprenticing with distilleries at night, learning to distill and blend whisky first-hand at some of Scotland's most prestigious distilleries. In 1920, Masataka returned to Japan, and within the decade, had produced the country's first single malt whisky.

Deeming the terroir perfect for whisky production, Masataka moved to the town of Yoichi in 1934 and opened the doors to Nikka Whisky Co. Yoichi is encapsulated by mountains (to the east, south and west) and by the Sea of Japan (to the north), creating a unique and isolated environment for whisky-production. The clean air, humidity an d access to underground water filtered through a layer of peat results in a rich and masculine malt. Years later, Masataka established the Miyagikyo Distillery, which is also situated in northern Japan. Surrounded by mountains and two rivers, the Miyagikyo Distillery produces a more mild and feminine whisky as compared to Yoichi.

About Highland Park 21 Year Old August 2019 Release

Situated in the Orkney archipelago in Northern Scotland, Highland Park Distillery was founded in 1798 by Magnus Eunson. The name of the distillery is derived not from the region of Scotland known as The Highlands — the Orkney islands are not a part of the Highlands — but rather from the region known as High Park, where the distillery was founded. Highland Park is an incredible longstanding whisky house, and they pride themselves on their rich Norse heritage, an essence that is reflected in their craft.

Today, over two centuries after its founding, Highland Park Distillery remains one of the few Scottish distilleries that continues to hand-turn, malt, and peat its own barley, using locally cut peat from the nearby Hobbister Moor. The malt is peated to 20 parts per million phenols, and then mixed with unpeated malt produced on the Scottish mainland. After malting the barley, Highland Park Distillery smokes it using peat sourced from Hobbister Moor, a peat bog located approximately seven miles from the distillery.

Hobbister Moor peat is sourced from floral heather bushes, which burn hotter and cleaner than the grassy peats of Islay. The peat is "absolutely fundamental in understanding the flavor of Highland Park Whisky," says Russell Anderson, the distillery manager. Together with Orkney's unique environment (the temperate, moist climate of the archipelago results in an even maturation process), the peat gives Highland Park Whisky its traditional malty flavors that are tempered by an ever-so-subtle touch of smoke.

The August 2019 release of the premium Highland Park 21 Year Old had Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion choose 3 different casks: first-fill sherry seasoned European Oak casks, first-fill sherry seasoned American oak casks, and refill casks. A total of just 15 casks went into this intense yet balanced expression. The first-fill casks take the center stage w ith the European oak bringing spice and dried fruit, the American oak ones adding vanilla and citrus. The whisky is bottled at 92 proof.

About Knob Creek 2001 Limited Edition Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon

In late 2001, Booker handed the tradition and responsibility of stewarding Knob Creek to his son, Fred Noe. Before passing the torch, however, Booker laid down several special barrels, which Fred patiently waited a full fourteen years before bottling. Started by Booker and carried on by Fred, as is the case with the entire Knob Creek legacy, Knob Creek 2001 Limited Edition Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the oldest whiskey ever released by Knob Creek, and the ultimate representation of this legendary father-and-son duo.

“Dad knew exactly what he wanted when it came to making whiskey, and I know [this] release would make him proud.”

Knob Creek 2001 Limited Edition Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a golden amber color and aromas of charred oak, vanilla, caramel and cooking spices. The palate is perfectly balanced between sweet and spicy, with notes of cream and nutmeg leading to a warm, complex finish.

Only 12,000 bottles will ever be released — make sure to pick up yours today!

About Knob Creek

Following the end of the American Revolutionary War, Johannes Reginald Beam emigrated from Germany to the United States and eventually settled in Kentucky County. At the time, Kentucky County was still considered part of Virginia, and was overseen by a military governor named John J. Bowman. After settling in Kentucky, Beam began harvesting corn and set forth a family tradition by distilling the excess grains he harvested into whiskey. Since then, seven generations of the Beam family have been involved in whiskey production for the eponymous company (the company is actually named after James Beam, who rescued it following Prohibition).

Knob Creek Bourbon was created by Beam’s grandson, Booker Noe, who after joining the family business in 1950 was promoted to Master Distiller just ten years later. Booker talked like a true Kentuckian an d was known for his contagious personality, and through his launch of the "Small Batch Bourbon Collection" — the collection includes Knob Creek as well as Basil Hayden’s, Booker’s, and Baker’s bourbons — he is often credited as the father of the small-batch bourbon movement.

Knob Creek Bourbon takes its name from the small water source, Knob Creek, that ran through President Abraham Lincoln’s childhood farm. Booker’s vision for Knob Creek Bourbon was that of an honest, quality bourbon that could meet the standards — strength, flavor, care, and patience — of bourbon made before prohibition distressed the industry just decades earlier. Like Abraham Lincoln himself, Booker designed Knob Creek Bourbon to be honest, unwavering, and full of character.

About Sullivans Cove Double Cask Single Malt Whisky

Sullivans Cove Single Malt Tasmanian Whisky is made from barley grown exclusively on the island of Tasmania. "The island's deep red basalt soil, pure water and mild temperatures result in a barley that is perfect for distillation," says Patrick Maguire, the distillery's founder and master distiller (his ancestors were convicts that were imprisoned on the island). In addition, the island has one of the oldest and strictest quarantine programs in the world, ensuring that the barley remains untainted.

Once the barley has been harvested, it is malted at the Cascade Brewery by Roger Ibbott, who has over four decades of experience malting barley. The malted barley is then mashed and fermented at Sullivans Cove Distillery using a unique strain of yeast developed specifically for the production of Sullivans Cove Whisky. Then, the wash is twice-distilled through a handmade copper-pot still. "The real trick is to cut the run short, so that only the sweetest, best flavors and purest alcohol from the heart of the run is captured", says Macguire. "It's not the most sensible approach by an accountant's standards, but then it's a good thing that we are not accountants!"

Following distillation, Sullivan's Cove Double Cask Single Malt Whisky is matured in a combination of American oak casks that were previously used to mature Jim Beam (two-thirds) and thirty-year old French oak casks that were previously used to mature port (one-third). After maturing for eleven years in each cask, the whiskies are married together, brought to proof and then bottled. Sullivan's Cove Double Cask Single Malt Whisky has an aroma of soft spices and vanilla, which lead to notes of cloves, rock candy and pear. The well-rounded and smooth finish has a touch of oak and milk chocolate.

The whisky earned the Gold Medal at the World Whisky Masters in 2011.

About Sullivans Cove

Situated along the banks of the River Derwent on the island of Tasmania, Sullivans Cove was the site of one of Britain's first penal colonies in Australia. In 1804, at the order of the Governor Ki ng of the British settlement of New South Wales, Lt. John Bowen transported some of the most heinous British criminals to Sullivans Cove, which eventually developed into the city of Hobart. Hobart was the perfect penal colony — the area's dense forests required a huge labor force in order to establish a settlement, and its isolation and inaccessibility ensured there was no escape. Today, the island of Tasmania remains of one the most isolated and natural places on earth — approximately 37% of the island is protected as natural reserves.
