Orphan Barrel Forged Oak 15 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
About Orphan Barrel Forged Oak 15 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Company is a dedicated cause, acquiring some of the rarest casks from some of the finest whiskey cellars, and releasing them into the world a cascade of limited edition, barrel aged ambrosia. In 2013 bourbon and Tennessee whiskey were labeled the fastest growing product category by volume in the U.S. alcohol business. The Orphan bottling project was more or less an ingenious response to this boom in the whiskey industry, and an effort to accommodate the vast quantities of leftover product from their monopoly of acquisitions.
When Diageo didn't have a place for the acquired product in their blends, they set the spirits aside. Time transformed this new spirit into aged delicacies. In 2013, Orphan Barrel Whiskey was created by Diageo, commercializing a large stock of ultra-aged American whiskeys that it had been maturing at the Stitzel-Weller distillery in Shively Kentucky.
The fifth expression of Diageo's Orphan Barrel line, Forged Oak is crafted from a mashbill of 86% corn, 7% barley, and 6% rye and aged for 15 years. “ A statuesque whiskey with aromas of cedar, maple and vanilla bean th at give way to seasoned woody notes of cocoa and young berries, ultimately leading to a long, dry finish of black pepper” (producer).

The Macallan 15 Year Old Fine Oak Scotch Single Malt Whisky
About The Macallan 15 Year Old Fine Oak Scotch Single Malt Whisky
Situated on a ridge above the banks of the River Spey, the Easter Elchies House has been the spiritual home of The Macallan for over three centuries. In 1820, Alexander Reid began renting the home from Sir Lewis Grant of Grant. Reid was a farmer, and soon after he sowed the fields surrounding the home with barley, Reid established the first licensed distillery on the estate, which he named Macallan after an ancient church that had been destroyed by fire during the 15th century. In the winter — when there was little activity on the farm — Reid would ferment and distill his excess grains into whisky, which was often drunk straight from the still or sold to travelers passing through the town.Today, the Macallan Estate encompasses 370 acres, 95 of which are devoted to the production of the Macallan Estate's Minstrel barley (a single acre produces about 2.5 tons of barley each year, enough to yield 1,800 bottles of The Macallan). In addition, the distillery contracts with farmers to purchase barley that is low in nitrogen and high in starch, resulting in a rich and oily whisky.
After the barley is harvested in late August and early September, it is malted before being mashed in one of The Macallan's two mash tuns, a process that takes between four and eight hours. Then, the barley is fermented with a specially cultured yeast before being distilled twice through The Macallan's copper-pot stills. The copper comprising the stills acts as a catalyst, and enhances the formation of sweet esters while minimizing impurities such as sulfur. In addition, the curiously small stills — some of "the smallest stills within the Scotch whisky industry," according to production manager Alexander Tweedie — produce a whisky with a heavy, oily flavor.
Following distillation, The Macallan distillers remove the heads and tails of the whisky and collect approximately 16% of the spirit to fill into casks for maturation. This “cut," which is among the highest of any Scottish distillery, results in a more full-bodied, rich whisky.
The Macallan has an exquisite Fine Oak Range, a series of whiskies aged in oak barrels with age statements ranging from 10 to 30 years. This 15-year-old whisky undergoes a triple maturation, with two types of wood, American and European ex-sherry and American ex-bourbon barrels.

About Scotch
Scotch is the most popular whisky in the world and is considered the king of them all! There are five whisky regions in Scotland (six if you count the not officially recognized Islands), and each of them produces spirits with unique properties and distinct tasting notes. (The type of grain used determents the type of the scotch.)
Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.

About Glen Moray
In its first life, Glen Moray was the Elgin West Brewery, until the end of the 19th century, when the brewery was reincarnated as the iconic Speyside distillery. Glen Moray was founded by Robert Thorne & Sons. Situated on the banks of River Lossie, in the Royal Burgh of Elgin, the first spirit dropped from the copper pot stills on the 13th of September 1897. There have only been five Master Distillers since then, which is a testament to their authenticity, and reputation for producing consistent, quality spirit. This pristine craftsmanship has been passed down through generations. With over a century of tradition, not much has changed at the iconic Speyside distillery. They continue to mature their whiskies in a wide array of casks, a technique which was once a rarity. Their whisky ages onsite in casks ranging from sherry and chardonnay to port, yielding an impressive spectrum of aromas and flavors.
After a brief pause in production during WWII, Glen Moray revamped their facilities and expanded, and the distillery is currently owned by French spirits company La Martiniquaise. Graham Coull is the fifth master distiller at Glen Moray. At the helm of the operation, he oversees all of the production that goes into their signature core range, featuring nine single malts.
