Chichibu The First Japanese Single Malt Whisky
About Chichibu The First Japanese Single Malt Whisky
For nearly three centuries, Ichiro Akuto's family brewed sake along the banks of the Tone River in central Japan. Following the end of World War II, his family received a distiller's license and purchased two second-hand stills from a Scottish distillery. By the turn of the century, however, his father had made the difficult decision to dismantle the stills and sell the 400 casks of remaining whisky that were still maturing in the distillery's rickhouses. Fueled by a belief in the potential for Japanese single malts, Ichiro purchased the casks from his father. In addition, Ichiro began studying distillation techniques at Benriach and Springbank Distillery, before returning to Japan and constructing a state-of-the-art distillery in Chichibu.Chichibu The First is the first official release of whisky from the Chichibu Distillery. The whisky was made by marrying together eight casks of maturing whisky, seven of which were crafted from American oak and previously used to mature bourbon and one crafted from Japanese Mizunara oak. Following a three-year maturation period, the whisky was bottled at cask strength. Chichibu The First Japanese Single Malt Whisky has an aroma of sandalwood, herbs and citrus, which gives way to notes of barley, woody spices and whipped cream on the palate. The finish is elegant and smooth, with touches of citrus, vanilla, caramel and plum. The whisky was named the Japanese Whisky of the Year by Whisky Advocate. About Clynelish
Founded in 1819, Clynelish Distillery is situated along the stormy coast of Sutherland County in the Highlands region of Scotland. The distillery was first established by the Marquis of Stafford who, after marrying into the Sutherland family, became the first Duke of Sutherland. For a number of years after the original distillery was constructed, the quality of Clynelish whisky was so prized that only friends of the Duke were able to purchase the whisky.Today — nearly two centuries after its initial founding — Clynelish Distillery continues to use many of the same ingredients, including Highlands-malted barley and water sourced from Clynemilton Burn, in crafting its single malt whisky as it did under the stewardship of the Duke of Sutherland. Once the malted barley and water arrive at the distillery, the grains are milled and mashed before being fermented in Clynelish's wooden washbacks. While wooden washbacks are more expensive and difficult to maintain as compared to stainless steel washbacks, they absorb a portion of the heat generated during the fermentation process and thus, create a lighter and more rich whisky. After fermentation, the wash is distilled twice: f irst through Clynelish's copper-pot wash still and then again through its spirit still.
About Scotch
Scotch is the most popular whisky in the world and is considered the king of them all! There are five whisky regions in Scotland (six if you count the not officially recognized Islands), and each of them produces spirits with unique properties and distinct tasting notes. (The type of grain used determents the type of the scotch.)
Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.

Laphroaig 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
About Laphroaig 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Situated on the southern coast of Islay, Laphroaig (pronounced La-froyg) Distillery was founded nearly two centuries ago by Donald and Alexander Johnston. The distillery derives its name from the ancient Gaelic word "lag"(meaning hollow) and the ancient Norse word "vik" (meaning bay), which refers to its location on the shores of Loch Laphroaig. In 1836, Donald Johnston offered his brother £350 for his interests the distillery, and ultimately became the sole proprietor of Laphroaig Distillery. For over a century, the distillery would remain in the hands of one of Johnston's descendants. In 1954, however, Ian Hunter passed away childless and bequeathed the distillery to Bessie Williamson, a secretary that had been working at the distillery for two decades. Hunter was incredibly protective of the distillery — while he slowly revealed its secrets to Williamson after she had earned his trust, Hunter prevented a cooper who was employed at the distillery from publishing his memoirs because they described the workings of the distillery in too great a detail.
Laphroaig Single Malt Whisky is one of the most flavorful and intense whiskies made anywhere in the world. During Prohibition, it was one of the few whiskies still legally imported into the United States, as it was considered a medicinal spirit. Laphroaig Single Malt is made from the finest Scottish barley, which is then malted at the distillery and smoked over a peat flame. Unlike other distilleries which source peat from the Scottish mainland, the peat used to smoke Laphroaig barley is made of from the heather, mosses and lichens of Islay and adds a distinct iodine-like flavor to the whisky.
After the barley has been malted and peated, it is fermented before being twice-distilled through Laphroaig's copper-pot stills. The unique stills have an usually flat base and flat surfaces, which lends to the overall intensity of the whisky. After the whisky has been distilled, it is aged in seasoned oak barrels, which are re-charred prior to being filled. The re-charring process caramelizes the remaining sugars in the barrel, and adds slightly sweet notes of vanilla and nutty dough to the whisky.
Originally launched in the 1980s, Laphroaig 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky quickly became a fan favorite, with popularity culminating in 2000 when it was chosen by the Prince of Wales for the “Erskine Charity Bottling”. While the 15 year old expression was eventually replaced by Laphroaig’s now-standard 18 year old, in honor of the distillery’s bicentennial in 2015, Laphroaig has re released a special 200th Anniversary Edition of the Laphroaig 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
Crafted in the exact same fashion as it was 30 years ago, Laphroaig 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky has an initial aroma of mint and grapefruit, as well as saltwater, peat smoke and apple orchards. On the palate, the whisky is dry and peppery, with touches of leather and tobacco leading to a mellow finish that’s underpinned by subtle notes of peat, almonds and dates.
Laphroaig 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was pre-released to the distillery’s 650,000 “Friends of Laphroaig” earlier this year, but sold out within hours. Pick up a bottle on Caskers today!

Mortlach 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
About Mortlach 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Situated in the heart of the Speyside region of Scotland, Dufftown is known the Whisky Capital of the World. The village, which produces more malt whisky than any other town in Scotland, is home to seven distilleries, the oldest of which is Mortlach Distillery.Mortlach Distillery was founded in 1823 by James Findlater, together with his friends Alexander Gordon and James Macintosh. In 1831, however, Findlater sold the distillery to John Robertson for the paltry sum of ₤270. In 1837, it was sold again to John and James Grant, who dismantled the distilling equipment and shuttered the doors to the distillery. For the next two decades, the building was used first as a brewery, and then, rather curiously, a church. In 1851, however, the distillery began producing whisky once more. Even at the time, it was an impressive distillery, according to the Wine & Spirits Trade Record. The distillery had two still-houses: "in one there are three old-fashioned stills…in the other there are three larger stills, installed in 1897.” The distillery also had “four gigantic malt floors, and the largest mash tun in the district.”
In 1964, the distillery was largely rebuilt and today, houses a unique configuration of six stills. The stills — three wash stills and three spirit stills — are each different shapes and sizes (one still is nicknamed “Wee Witchie” because it is shaped like a witch’s cap), and aren’t paired together. This unusual configuration, together with the partial triple distillation method used at Mortlach Distillery, produces a whisky that is full-bodied and meaty.
Mortlach 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is part of the newest range of Mortlach single malts. Presented in a bottle designed by Laurent Hainaut, the whisky has a golden amber color and vibrant citrus notes on the nose, especially green apple and dried mango. The palate opens with a tad more sweetness, including gingerbread and orange peel, before developing into a thick, silky combina tion of dark chocolate and almonds. The whisky finishes with a dry, earthy spice, conjuring wood and even some tobacco leaves.
